Luminaria Light the Way at Relay For Life of DeKalb County
Ceremony to Honor Survivors and Remember Those Who Have Lost the Battle
May 21, 2007A special Luminaria ceremony, held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of DeKalb County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. Luminaria will be lit at the Sycamore High School Track on Saturday, June 23 at dusk to represent these individuals.
Relay For Life is a fun-filled, overnight event where teams from local businesses, clubs, schools and families take turns walking around a track relay-style with the common goal of eliminating cancer. A highlight of the evening is the Luminaria Ceremony held after dark to honor cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle against cancer. The luminaria line the track and continue to burn throughout the night to remind participants of the incredible importance of their contributions. Each luminaria candle is $5 and is personalized to honor a cancer survivor or in memory of someone who has lost their life to cancer.
The goal of this year’s Relay For Life of DeKalb County is to raise more than $120,000 for cancer research, community educational programs and advocacy initiatives, and support services for patients and their families in DeKalb County.
To purchase a luminaria or to learn more about how to participate in Relay For Life, contact Maggie Finn at 815.895.4347. Committee members will be available to take luminaria orders and provide information about the Relay event outside of Wal-Mart in DeKalb on Saturday, June 2, from 9am to 6pm.
